I Almost Missed It

In the fall of 2022, I was sitting in a briefing room watching a demonstration of an AI system that could analyze thousands of data points, identify patterns, and recommend a course of action in seconds. The kind of thing that used to take a team of analysts three days.

I had seen a lot of technology in 30 years of military aviation. I had flown combat missions with some of the most advanced systems ever built. But this was different. This was not a military system. This was a commercial platform. And it was available to anyone.

That was my aha moment.

Not because the technology was impressive. Because I realized that the single biggest advantage I had as a Naval Aviator, the ability to process information faster than the other side and act on it, was now sitting on a laptop that any business owner in America could buy for a few hundred dollars a month.

What I Learned in the Cockpit That Changed How I See AI

When you fly combat missions, you learn very quickly that the pilot who wins is not always the most skilled. The pilot who wins is the one who makes better decisions faster. We called it the OODA Loop. Observe. Orient. Decide. Act. The side that completes that loop faster controls the engagement.

I flew over 600 combat hours. Every single one of them taught me the same lesson: speed of decision is the decisive factor. Not strength. Not resources. Speed of decision.

When I left the military and started working with businesses, I was shocked by what I saw. Companies with great products losing customers because they took 48 hours to respond to an inquiry. Service businesses spending 20 hours a week on tasks a computer could handle in 20 minutes. Owners making critical decisions based on gut instinct because pulling the actual data took too long.

They were losing the OODA Loop every single day. And they did not even know it.

The Business Owner Who Changed My Mind About What Was Possible

A few months after that briefing room moment, I started working with a home services company in South Florida. Good owner. Hard worker. His team was generating leads but closing less than 20 percent of them. He thought the problem was his sales team. It was not.

The problem was speed. His average response time to a new lead was 6 hours. In home services, if you do not respond within 5 minutes, 78 percent of prospects have already called someone else. He was losing four out of five potential customers before his team even picked up the phone.

We built him an AI-powered follow-up system. New lead comes in. Within 60 seconds, an automated message goes out, personalized to what the person inquired about, with a link to book a call. His response time went from 6 hours to 60 seconds. His close rate went from 20 percent to 47 percent in 90 days.

He did not hire more salespeople. He did not spend more on advertising. He just stopped losing the OODA Loop.

Why Most Business Owners Are Still Sitting on the Sidelines

I talk to business owners every week who know AI is important but have not done anything about it. When I ask them why, I hear the same three things.

First, they think it is too complicated. It is not. The platforms we use today are built for business owners, not engineers. If you can use a smartphone, you can use these tools.

Second, they think it is too expensive. The average AI automation system we build for a small business costs less per month than one hour of a part-time employee. The ROI is not even close.

Third, and this is the one that concerns me most, they think they have time to figure it out later. They do not. The businesses in your market that adopt AI first are building a compounding advantage right now. Every month you wait, that gap gets wider.

What the Aha Moment Actually Feels Like

I have watched hundreds of business owners have their own aha moment. It usually happens in one of two ways.

The first way is painful. They lose a major client to a competitor who responded faster, followed up better, or delivered a more personalized experience. They realize after the fact that AI could have prevented it. That is a hard lesson.

The second way is exciting. They see a live demonstration of what their business could look like with AI running the follow-up, the scheduling, the customer communication, and the data analysis. They see the hours they would get back. They see the leads they would stop losing. They see the revenue sitting on the table right now. That is the moment I love.

My job is to make sure more business owners have the second experience than the first.

Three Things You Can Do This Week

You do not need to overhaul your entire business to start winning with AI. Here are three specific things you can do in the next seven days.

First, measure your response time. How long does it take your business to respond to a new inquiry? Time it. If the answer is more than 5 minutes, you are losing customers right now. That is the first thing to fix.

Second, identify your highest-volume repetitive task. What does your team do every day that follows the same steps every time? Scheduling, follow-up emails, intake forms, status updates. Pick one. That is your first automation candidate.

Third, book a strategy call. I will personally look at your business, identify the three highest-impact places to apply AI, and give you a clear plan to implement them. No sales pitch. No jargon. Just a straight conversation about what will actually move the needle for your specific situation.

The aha moment is waiting for you. I have seen it happen for business owners, military leaders, educators, and executives. It is the same every time. Once you see what is possible, you cannot unsee it.

The question is not whether AI will change your business. It already is. The question is whether you are going to lead that change or react to it.
